Pick up my new sci-fi novel Herokiller, and read my first series, The Earthborn Trilogy, which is also on audiobook. We’ll have to wait and see.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. If not, TLOU2 could be launching very, very close to the PS5, but there are worse things than having that be a potential “enhanced” launch window title, if that’s how this ends up playing out. We have yet to figure out if the PS5 and Xbox Series X may be delayed out of their holiday launch window due to the pandemic, but so far both companies seem to be indicating that isn’t the case. It’s not like people won’t buy the game in 3-6 more months when it finally does arrive. I do think they probably could have done an all-digital launch and had it work out okay in the current climate with everyone thirsting for a new, high quality game like TLOU2, but I also understand why they might want to wait until all this passes so they can do a more traditional launch. I think all of these factors are combining to be the rationale for the delay. And they’re not going to put out an unfinished product even if it’s just that final 1% that needs touching up. That does not seem like a process that would translate well to having everyone work from home, and I do have to imagine this has messed up their final polish phase to at least some extent. Naughty Dog says they’re down to bug fixing, but they are a studio that is known for putting out an extremely high-quality product at launch and achieving that through extreme crunch at the studio, unfortunately. And given the timeline, this could potentially turn The Last of Us Part 2 into something more akin to a fall/holiday release, though Naughty Dog says they hope the delay won’t be that long.įinally, there’s likely the issue of polish. I mean, if there was ever a time to experiment with something like that it could be now, but it seems like Sony is probably weighing the loss of physical sales against potential increased digital sales during the pandemic, and deciding they’d rather do a more traditional release once all this settles. So, why can’t they do an all-digital launch? While we don’t know exactly what the twists and turns of the game will be, we certainly know that it will have twists and turns, and that potential spoilers are likely a bigger issue than they are for FF7, a remake of a game from 1997. It’s easy to imagine that Naughty Dog is potentially terrified about spoilers leaking out about The Last of Us Part 2 if some regions managed to get their hands on physical copies well before they’re supposed to, and they could beat the entire game before other regions even got their hands on it.
